Hi everyone, just wanted to say happy 2012!

I'm still doing alterations and dressmaking as well as my little fashion label Love Love Lorelei.

I will be making a new blog site for Fine and Dandy, the dressmaking/alterations side of things so watch this space for a link to it.

I'm making lots of infinity/ convertible dresses this wedding season for bridesmaids dresses. Above is a pic of some I made last year.

Its that time of year for school balls again!
Shopping for a dress designer or vintage is exciting and fun but getting a dress made tailored to you is also a great option - you get a dress that you know no one else will be wearing on the night and it can be a really affordable option if your design is not too complicated or you have a store bought pattern to work with. I usually make a few ball dresses each season and love to work with clients to make their perfect dress. The most affordable way to go is to get a pattern made up to fit you perfectly - most designs can be made up for $150- $250 ( + fabrics, zip ect..) Simple design elements can be altered and you get it fitted perfectly to you. I can also make up your own unique design from a picture or idea you have. If you still haven't found your perfect dress maybe I can help! Basic Price guide

Here are some prices for basic jobs,

Pants/Jeans hem : $14
Blind hem ( by hand) : $20
Skirt hems :$12- $18
Mend hole e.g in jeans : $5- $10 per hole
Take in jeans to make skinny fit : $25
Sew on buttons : $2.50 per button ( $5 minimum charge)

I just finished painstakingly copying out all the code myself and Im proud! Sam (my sweet boyfriend) has just started comp science at uni and Iv'e been becoming a bit more familiar with the whole thing, but thats the first thing like that I've done. It feels good to learn how to do computer stuff- even if it is laughably basic. Usually I just copy/ paste code for links and stuff like that but somehow I couldnt do that here- I wouldn't be surprised if i just couldn't find the right place to do it - but anyhow...

Music inspires me quite a lot as a designer- not in any direct way like movies or seeing someone who looks amazing on the street does but in a more inward kind of spiritual way.. its like music can reconnect you to inspiration and excitement of life in general and for me being a big daydreamer and fantasy part-taker some songs can really get me going- slipping into those beautiful places where image and energy and sexuality and emotion take over.

Dandylion is tucked away in the Left Back near that anarchist hotbed Oblong. Lorene Harris's shop is big on the kind of individuality that will help you fit in on Cuba St. To get your indie on, or to dress appropriately for a big trip to Dunedin float on down to Dandylion. A lot of the clothes and accessories are made from recycled materials, there are second-hand shoes, hand-selected op-shop finery for hire and a goodly range of zines. Lorene's own zine is easy to spot; pink and adorned with cherries, filled with poetry and sketches, handmade on beautiful paper with the pages sewn together. Nice, very nice.

But we digress, this category is about being best dressed after all. Everything you need to be well put together is here - bags, belts, shoes, badges and the old craft fair favourite; hand-knitted fingerless gloves. If you want to keep in real in the down to earth NZ socially responsible style without tipping over into feral territory I recommend that you let Loren's sewing machine do the sewing, leaving you more time for activism and gardening, both of which are worthy pursuits.

CAST Couture is a new label to Dandylion Boutique, I always love discovering new designers who are dedicated to making in New Zealand and have a great style of their own. Cast couture by Catherine Stoneley is an innovative range of chic streetwear for the modern woman.

CAST Couture began in the winter of 06' as a small money making venture on the side of High School studies. What started as a small hobby, soon grew with the ongoing demand and within 6 months over 250 one off garments were sold.
Now, CAST Couture is the full time job and love child of 18 year old Catherine Stoneley. A strong willed and highly independent creative artisan, inspired by the ordinary and not so ordinary, conforming to no written code- Catherine creates clothing for the likeminded individual.

Recently Dandylion participated in the St.Johns Presbytarian Opshop fashion gala evening where a small collection of our vintage dresses were shown. The evening was held as a celebration and goodbye to the oppurtunity shop which has been at 147 cuba street for many many years and is now closing down as the area is being redeveloped. Surprise! Dandylion has moved into a brand new space. You wont have any trouble finding the new store though - its now at 208 Left bank Arcade - just a hop, skip and a jump from the old Dandylion. Just venture a little bit further into the arcade past the fantastic California sushi. New Dandylion is a cute corner shop with lots of windows and space to display all the great New Zealand designer fashion we have + our "frocks that rock!" - vintage dresses that are for costume hire. I also have a little workspace - remember that you can get alterations and dressmaking done in store.

Eco-FASHION & Dandylion

There are more than a few good reasons to shop at Dandylion beyond the fact that we have some of the cutest one off pieces in town. As well as promoting up and coming N.Z designers, a top priority for me and others involved has been to promote consumer awareness about where things come from and the processes they have been through.

The fashion industry is notorious for its exploitation of people and our environment and when shopping its near impossible to avoid being a part of the whole thing. Sorry! this is getting depressing! Well - at Dandylion while we dont pretend to be perfect ( we still use commercially produced fabrics) we are trying to bypass a couple of the yuckier problems such as sweatshop labour and the pervasive throw away mentality. Our designers make all their own pieces for decent pay, and many use recycled fabrics and try to buy N.Z made materials where possible.

We aim to sell only very well made items that are more individualistic and not so faddish that your completely over them in 6 months. Iv'e always considered it an unspoken rule but want to make sure everyone knows that at Dandylion qualitys really important and I'll mend for free anything bought at Dandylion within a year of purchase. Its good to get thinking about these issues and following is an article I thought was interesting and is a good introduction to the concept of eco-fashion and whats going on .

Eco-Fashion, by Tanya Davies - Options magazine

"Because of its sheer size, the clothing indusry's impact on global warming is probably larger than all of Africa." Katharine Hamnett

The fashion and textile industry in the US alone is worth an estimated $300 billion. Add to that the rest of the consuming world and thats an awful lot of energy, fabric, dye and sweatshop workers. And whats really sad is that an awful lot of it ends up in landfill within just a few years.

But the fashion industry is at the dawn of a new era. Just as the food industry and toiletries and cosmetic industries have proved, ecological awareness can be big business. British designer Katharine Hamnett launched and ecological line, E, in 2005 and Oscar de la Renta, Diane von Furstenburg and Linda Loudermilk are all working on sustainable lines or pieces in the US. And its not just the high end designers. The UK has a large number of middle range independent labels creating hippy chic, sports and urban wear and in America 100% organic Loomstate are a 'must have' label among stylish greenies.

Melissa Laird, Senior Head teacher of Fashion and Applied studies at the Whitehouse Intitute of Design, is hoping to see more Ausralian designers embracing sustainable practices. 'The traditional fashion roles are based on planned obsolesence, where garments are intended to be out of fashion from one season to the next, forcing people to buy new clothes', she says. So is there any hope that fashion could become sustainable?

Of Australia's independent designers Susan Dimasi and Chantal Macdonald's Material by-product are attempting to create sustainalbe lines by reworking old clothes, and using cloth cutting techniques which minimise waste. Theres also Peter Boyd and Denise Sprinskyj's label S!x, incorporating elements of sustainability, such as re-using and re-inventing fabrics into their designs. And Gabriel Scarvelli has created an excellent reputation for himself using a high percentage of natural fibres and dyes, recycling, and paying bead workers in Calcutta up to 48 times the average wage. But individually recycled pieces are far too costly to point the way forward for the fashion industry. Rather they they are intended to get consumers thinking about their consumption.

At the high street level Hunter Gatherer now have two store, in St Kilda and Fitzroy, selling vintage pieces, accessories and their own label. The 'No sweatshop' accredited label is the initiative of the Brotherhood of St Laurence and all proceeds go back into helping people.

Cotton requires very large amounts of pesticides and water. In addition, cotton farming is increasingly becoming subject to genetic engineering as cotton plants are gene-spliced with a soil bacteria which enables the plant to emit its own pesticide. According to Ronnie Cummins at the Organic Consumers Association, genetically modified cotton crops already account for approximately 60% of all US crops. Unfortunately organic cotton is still relatively difficult for designers to get hold of in Australia and its alternative , hemp, is still way out on the periphery of the fashion industry.

But the presence of high street brands entering the environmental arena proves that ecological fashion is hitting the mainstream. Levi's US stores launch a line of 100% organic cotton jeans in November this year made with recycled buttons, rivets and zippers and natural indigo dyes. And Nike have set a target to blend 5% organic cotton into all their cotton containing materials by 2010. Of course these big brands still use sweatshop labour, and threaten to corner the organic cotton market. But they can raise awareness of ecological fashion through mainstream pieces, which is something Rachel Bending, founder of Slingflings in NSW, also wants to do.

Bending says, 'There are two sets of consumers that are buying 'green' products. The first are interested in taking care and will automatically but green first if they can. The challenge for me is converting the people who dont care. My mission statement is pioneering sustainability in fashion design because fashion is an industry that notorious for not caring.

Sue Thomas is a fashion lecturer at the Royal Melbourne institute of Technology. she believes ecological fashion has a great future thanks to the next generation of designers. 'I have found that the push has been very strong from the students who are in their late teens and early twenties, they are not happy about current practices. ' she says. But can we stop consuming? Sue says we can change the way we shop. 'The students are interested in the notion of, not stopping consuming because it just cant stop, but rather revisiting the idea of how often and why. So garments are made very well and are interesting enough that you dont want to bin them after a season and move on to the next silly throw away thing. On certain days candy is the perfect accessory, the dairy on my corner has candy bracelets - yum! Over the past couple of weeks new summery fashion has been coming in, and theres been loads of candy bright colours! Last summer I was obessed with pink and green, now I've shifted my 80's obsessed eyes over to pink and yellow!!, bright Cyndi Lauper-esque lace net leggings and other such aerobic fantasticness. Wow! I went to the dress rehearsal of the wearable arts awards show last night and it was amazing. It was beautiful, funny and sexy what with fantastic music and lighting, glitter, snow and a troop of slender topless male dancers, and then theres the entrys themselves. If your not one of the lucky ones who scored a ticket to the actual show definetly see it when its on T.V.

At Dandylion theres been new stock arriving every week like usual, Lately theres been some great pieces from lekker becky, a new label "humbug" with super cute screenprinted tees, and today we got a whole lot more of those cute photo printed badges with dolls, teapots, mushrooms and things from Plastic Fairy. I have some great pictures to put on here of some more new clothes but its a mystery to me why the computer doesnt want to do exactly what I ask it to tonight, as far as electric husbands go I think im being snubbed. - If you haven't heard The Bachelorette yet go the the record store and listen!! Shes from Auckland and does pretty electro/indie music, I went to her show a few weeks back and it was one of the best Iv'e seen all year.
